Langkawi's
airport is called the Padang Matsirat airport or
Langkawi International
Airport, located about 20km from Kuah town. Langkawi International
Airport , is an airport situated on the duty-free island of Langkawi in
Kedah, Malaysia. The airport is located at Padang Matsirat and is about
25 minutes of driving from the town center, Kuah. Flights from the
Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur to the airport take about 60 minutes
time.

The
Langkawi International Airport, established in 1987,
located about 20km
from Kuah town. Langkawi Airport has state of the art terminals
allowing them to manage quite a large number of passengers weekly.
Langkawi Airport is currently being used as a hub by some airlines and
is connected to the main city by public transport. Be advice the
allowed speed outside Langkawi Airport is 90 km/h. The shops inside the
airport are fairly expensive. Langkawi Airport takes extra measures
concerning security therefore it is fitted with up to date mechanized
systems that can handle suspicious devices. The airport also has
advanced technologies - for example advanced illuminating systems. The
luggage of the passengers is processed by modern conveyors that usually
distribute the luggage in no time. This particular conveyor system
found only in Langkawi Airport can detect bombs.
Before the operational launch of the Langkawi International Airport, it
was a mere a landing strip transporting a maximum of twenty passengers
on each trip. At present the airport has been made into an
international-class airport with world class amenities after extensive
inspection and repair costing MYR90 million!
Currently the airport boasts of an elongated terminal and a runway that
is fitted to accommodate B 747 aircraft-type operation. The airport is
also capable of handling 2.5 million passengers per annum and one
thousand passengers during the peak hours.
The airport is large and spacious with a four-time larger entrance hall
and well-furnished arrival and departure halls. There are also
twenty-two duty-free concessionaires including a fast food center and a
restaurant. As Langkawi is a duty- free island you can get drinks and
cigarettes at very low prices. The airport also offers ample parking
area that can accommodate up to five hundred cars.
The Langkawi International Airport is a tourist attraction because it
serves as a venue for the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace
Exhibition or LIMA which is an international aerospace event for
aviation industry and aero performances for the public. Aerospace
includes space travel, air, manufacturing and associated research with
industrial, commercial and military applications. Thus LIMA exhibits
not only the aerospace but also the maritime industries in the
fast-developing Asian commercial aviation, defense and airport markets.
LIMA was the pet project of the former Prime Minister of Malaysia- Dr
Mahathir Bin Mohamad.
In 2005, the airport handled 830,334 passengers and 8,021 aircraft
movements.
Taxis, car rental services, shopping arcade and banks are available at
the airport. The are various services available in the airport which
includes police services, customer service and information counter,
customs & immigration departments, porter services,
connectivity
services and internet services. The airport also has 22 duty free
shops, restaurants and a good number of food outlets also. There are
separate smoking ares for people who like to smoke. The airport is
fitted with security system and survellience cameras to ensure safety
and security of the travelers
